More than 200 Syracuse City School District parents will be attending the Syracuse Family Leadership Conference on Saturday, May 22, in the Life Sciences Complex on the Syracuse University campus. The conference, sponsored by the Syracuse City School District Parent Partnership Network, Say Yes to Education and Prevention Network, will offer parents more than 30 workshops in the areas of student achievement, building stronger families and parent/child communication.

Jaklin Kornfilt, professor of languages, literatures and linguistics (LLL) in SU’s College of Arts and Sciences, has been elected recipient of the 2010 Humboldt Research Award.

Outside Gerlinde Ulm Sanford’s office in H.B. Crouse Hall is a small altar adorned with reminders of one of Syracuse University’s most beloved professors: a copy of Goethe’s “Faust,” photos and postcards, several origami balls, flowers and dried fruit and leaves. Tucked inside one of the artifacts—a magazine about Weimar, Sanford’s second home—is a faded clipping about the 2004 fire that tore through the city’s Herzogin Anna Amalia Library, destroying more than 50,000 books. Friend and colleague Karl Solibakke suspects that the conflagration was not far from Sanford’s mind, even up until her death on Tuesday, April 27, at age 70.

Kristin Carlson ’99 and Lee Zurik ’96, alumni of the broadcast journalism program in Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and recent recipients of the prestigious Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award, will visit SU on Wednesday, March 3.

The 20th anniversary of the Alexia Foundation will be celebrated at the annual Alexia Photojournalism Seminar and Competition on Friday, Feb. 19, and Saturday, Feb. 20, at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Over the past two decades, the foundation has awarded over 25 scholarships for SU students to study photojournalism at SU Abroad in London.

The annual celebration is among the largest University-sponsored events in the U.S. to honor King.
