Bruce Kingma
Bruce Kingma is a leading educator and researcher in entrepreneurship, economic development, online education, business communications, and the economics of information technology, library science, and nonprofit management. He is a Professor of Entrepreneurship with joint appointments in the School of Information Studies (iSchool) and Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University. He is the former Associate Provost for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (2007-13) and the former Associate Dean of the iSchool (2000-07). Professor Kingma has held academic appointments at Syracuse University, the University of Texas at El Paso, Victoria University of Wellington, The University of British Columbia, Case Western Reserve University, The University at Albany, and Texas A&M University.
Professor Kingma leads the Innovation, Design, and Startups (IDS) minor which supports student entrepreneurs at Syracuse University.
From 2020-2024, Professor Kingma served as the Director of Undergraduate Programs in the iSchool. He added three new degree programs including a Bachelor of Science in Applied Data Analytics (ADA); a Bachelor of Science in Innovation, Society, and Technology (IST); and an online Bachelor of Science in Information Management & Technology (IMT). These programs provided undergraduates in the iSchool a broader range of programs complementing our degree in management to include data science, innovation, and social justice.
During 2007-2013, Provost Kingma transformed entrepreneurship education at Syracuse University to focus on helping students, veterans, faculty, and community members start ventures. He worked with faculty across campus to create experiential, discipline-focused programs in entrepreneurship education. This Syracuse Model of experiential-focused entrepreneurship education increased annual enrollments in e-courses to over 7,500 students; produced over 100 new student ventures annually; and resulted in a top-ten national ranking in entrepreneurship education in Forbes, US News, The Princeton Review, Entrepreneur Magazine, Bloomberg, and Businessweek. In 2012, President Obama invited Provost Kingma to speak at the White House for a national summit on entrepreneurship education.
Provost Kingma led the Syracuse University Scholarship in Action initiatives connecting the campus to the community in economic development. Scholarship in Action programs raised over $350m in funding for The Near West Side Initiative; The Connective Corridor; The South Side Innovation Center; The Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems Innovation; The Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans; The Kauffman Campus Initiative; and The JP Morgan Chase Syracuse University Partnership.

Nine faculty and staff members that were part of Provost Kingma’s team received The Syracuse University Chancellor’s Citation for Excellence.
Professor Kingma is the founder of the award-winning Syracuse Student Sandbox, an incubator, accelerator, and curriculum that helps students in Upstate New York start ventures. He is founder of the Global Sandbox, an innovative partnership between universities in China, India, Kenya, Ukraine, and Syracuse University that supports students from around the world starting global micro-multinational ventures.
From 2000-2007, Professor Kingma served as the Associate Dean in the School of Information Studies. He is the founder of the award-winning WISE Consortium—the first international consortium of universities in online education. In 2002, Syracuse University and 12 other universities from around the globe came together to share online courses, pedagogy, and training for online education in information science.
