African American Studies Department Chair and Associate Professor Herb Ruffin was interviewed by USA Today for the article “Would resuming or halting the NBA season help the league’s efforts to fight racial inequality?” The article weighs whether NBA players should wait to start the season amid both a pandemic and national racial strife. Professor Ruffin argues on the side of resuming play, saying that athletes “are going to be playing all day and have all kinds of inventive ways to protest. They would possibly be emboldened since the NBA players are all inside the same space than where they are scattered throughout the United States.”
