Innovations that improve buildings will be the focus of SyracuseCoE’s 2014 Annual Symposium. The event will feature presentations addressing advances that improve energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality and resilience to intense storms and other disturbances. Three tracks of sessions will focus on emerging innovations that enhance the effectiveness of building systems, occupant well-being and social-ecological resilience.

SyracuseCoE, New York State’s Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems at Syracuse University, presents the 14th annual symposium on Advanced Building Systems: Integrating Efficiency, Quality and Resilience. It will be held on Oct. 15 and 16 at the Crowne Plaza, 701 E. Genesee St., and at SyracuseCoE Headquarters, 727 E. Washington St., in Syracuse.

The one-and-a-half day symposium brings together experts on high-performance buildings and building systems. This year will feature several keynote speakers, and more than 30 speakers in sessions that address topics in design, technology and practice. The event also includes a poster session and competition featuring students and industry partners, a dynamic networking reception and a sneak preview of new SyracuseCoE laboratories.

Registration is required and seating is limited, so early registration is recommended. Visit Symposium Registration for more information and registration.

Keynote speakers will include:

• William P. Bahnfleth, professor and director of the Indoor Environment Center in the Department of Architectural Engineering at Penn State, will discuss “Are We Putting Enough Energy into Making Buildings Healthy?”
• Anna Dyson, professor and CASE Director, Rensselaer Architecture, will present discuss “From Built Environments to Built Ecologies.”
• Joseph Lstiburek, principal, Building Science Corp., will speak on “Innovations in Energy Efficient and Resilient Building Enclosures.”
• Christoph Reinhart, associate professor, MIT Architecture, will speak on “Comfortable, Walkable and Efficient—Towards Sustainable Urban Architecture.”

“Our Symposium this year addresses emerging issues and opportunities for one of our signature strengths: innovations that create better buildings, including improving energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, and resilience,” says Edward A. Bogucz, executive director of SyracuseCoE. “The program includes sessions that will be of interest to a broad range of attendees, including students, researchers, manufacturers, architects and engineers, and building owners and operators.”

“Attendees will take away knowledge about the latest high-performance efficiency innovations that range in scale from nano to building-wide,” says Jianshun “Jensen” Zhang, symposium committee chair and professor in Syracuse University’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. “Topics will address integration of technological efficiencies with overall design quality to produce performative efficacies.”

Call for Posters
SyracuseCoE invites abstracts for poster presentations related to the symposium theme from SyracuseCoE industry and university partners, as well as undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D. students. Cash prizes will be awarded to students. For more information, visit Call for Posters.
