How green is Hollywood? Get a sneak peek at what going green in the film industry really entails at the screening of “Greenlit,” an original film-within-a-film documentary about producing a sustainable Hollywood picture. “Greenlit” will be shown on Tuesday, April 10, at 7 p.m. in Watson Theater in the Menschel Media Center as part of the SU Showcase for Sustainability 2012 documentary series. Admission is free and open to the public.

greenlitAccording to a UCLA study, the film and television industry is the third biggest polluter in Los Angeles. In questioning the industry’s environmental impact, director Miranda Bailey puts their green commitment to the test as she follows the production of “The River Why,” which has hired a sustainability consultant to make the set greener. Bailey’s eco-documentary takes viewers through a well-intentioned, revealing and amusing attempt at moviemaking that treads lightly on the environment.

While “Greenlit” uncovers the difficulties of going green on a movie set, it also provides insight into the money-saving opportunities of creating a sustainable film, such as various reuse and recycling initiatives. How does everyone behind the scenes get involved in successfully creating a green Hollywood film? Join us to learn more about the challenges faced and the efforts made in moving toward a more sustainable entertainment industry.

Complimentary refreshments will be provided, so please remember to bring your reusable cups, bottles, bowls, plates, utensils, etc., as this is a zero-waste event!

Next up is “Waste Land,” an artistic documentation of the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro and its “catadores”—self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. “Waste Land” will be the final film in the Showcase documentary series, and is scheduled to screen on Tuesday, April 17.

SU Showcaseis a campuswide, Earth Week celebration of students’ sustainability work and green ideas across the energy, entertainment and plastics industries. The event—geared toward all SU and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry  students—is also open to the public and will be held all day on Wednesday, April 18, in SU’s Schine Student Center.

Check out the complete SU Showcase schedule, and follow SU Showcase on Facebook and Twitter for the latest updates.
