SU concentrates phone book distribution based on sustainable practices

In an effort to reduce paper waste on campus and in support of the University’s Climate Action Plan, Syracuse University has modified the protocol for the annual distribution of Verizon telephone directories (Super Yellow Pages) to its on-campus departments. Effective immediately, the Verizon directories will no longer be delivered in bulk to University buildings or departments. Rather, the University will order a smaller set number of directories based on pre-orders from individual departments.

The United States currently consumes one-third of the Earth’s timber and paper, making paper the largest part of the waste stream at 37.5 percent. In reducing the amount of unused paper on campus, the University is advancing its commitment to becoming climate neutral by 2040.

Departments wishing to obtain a specific number of Verizon telephone directories are able to place those orders through the Materials Distribution online ordering system (http://mdoos.syr.edu/) by Feb. 25; use stock code CS01-0050-Verizon Telephone Directory. The directories will be available at no cost. Orders will be delivered to departments by Materials Distribution when they arrive in June.

With the availability of the Verizon Super Pages online at http://www.superpages.com/ny/syracuse, University departments are encouraged to consider ordering paper directories only for the central areas of their building as needed.
