SU Showcase 2011 offers wide variety of events

A full schedule of fun and interactive programs is slated for SU Showcase 2011 “Sustainability for a Livable Future” on May 2 in the Schine Student Center. Both the campus community and the general public are invited to explore the various attractions geared toward sustainability novices and gurus alike.

Dave Eichorn, meteorologist and current SUNY-ESF environmental studies graduate student, will kick off things with a morning “teach-in” on climate change. The “green museum” will follow, running throughout the day, and feature an expo of student work by Showcase Fellows and student-produced exhibits on the “Anthropocene Era” and “Visions for a Sustainable Future,” among many other exhibits. SU Showcase will conclude with an evening program on creative, visual approaches to understanding global warming.

A sustainable dinner, concert and films is just a sampling of the pre-SU Showcase events set for the week leading up to the big day. The weeklong schedule will begin on Monday, April 25, with a sustainable dinner to be served up in all SU dining halls. Each day for the rest of the week other sustainability-related events will be held to raise the campus’s environmental awareness and generate excitement for the May 2 Showcase main event.

7:30 p.m. • Big Tree concert
Jabberwocky Café, Schine Student Center, free general admission.
Big Tree is a pop band for naturalists whose sound taps into organic folk, greasy blues, ambient rock and modal jazz.

April 28
7 p.m. • “Plastic Planet” film screening
Life Sciences Complex, Room 105

• 11 a.m. • “Voices in the Wind”
  A puppet production by students from SU and Van Duyn Elementary School in Syracuse, under the direction of Geoffrey Navias of Open Hand Theater.
• Noon-2 p.m. • “Kill a Watt”
  Engineering students will measure the energy drain from your portable devices.
• 1 p.m. • Fashion Show
  Recycled and up-cycled fashions by students in the College of Visual and Performing Arts.
• 2 p.m. • Tour of Sustainable SU
  Visit the Syracuse Center of Excellence building, 207 E. Washington St., and other sites of interest.
• 2-4 p.m. • Presentations of student research and designs
  
• 4 p.m. • Fashion Show
