Writer/director Rod Lurie will visit the Newhouse School on Thursday, Sept. 23, and Friday, Sept. 24, to discuss and present an advance screening of his film “Straw Dogs,” a remake of the original.

Local resident Jake Penny, 14, has always dreamed of writing and starring in his own movie. That dream became a reality this summer with the help of students and alumni from the Newhouse School’s Television-Radio-Film (TRF) department.

A team of students from the NewHouse, a student-run advertising agency in Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, placed first in the American Advertising Federation’s National Student Advertising Competition (District Two), held April 30 in New York City.

This summer, nine students in the Newhouse School will go “off the grid” to rural Northeastern Washington State, where they will interview veterans as part of News21.

The Newhouse School recently won two 2009 Mark of Excellence Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).
