Message From University Leadership

Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff:

We are aware that many in our community have questions about executive orders, policies, and guidance from the new Presidential Administration and federal agencies. As these actions continue to evolve—with some being revised, amended, or paused each day—it is essential that we stay responsive to the shifting landscape. Our government relations team is in close communication with our federal delegation to interpret the complexities of these actions and working with University leaders to fully understand the impact of these new directives.

Among the areas of initial impact is the University’s research enterprise. For example, last week several federal agencies instructed principal investigators with federal grants to halt work on activities deemed “non-compliant” under the new guidelines. The Office of Research has been in regular communication with faculty, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and research staff regarding the impact to their work. The University will continue sharing updated guidance as new details emerge.

We understand that these orders raise uncertainty among some members of our community. Despite new and forthcoming changes in federal law and guidance, what remains constant is Syracuse University’s commitment to being a university welcoming to all. As new information that directly impacts our people becomes clear, we will communicate guidance to those affected. We remain committed to upholding our mission and values as we navigate these complex issues together.

Sincerely,

Chancellor Kent Syverud

Interim Vice Chancellor, Provost, and Chief Academic Officer
