Lisa Manning

Professor of Physics

Lisa Manning is the William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Physics. Professor Manning is also director of The BioInspired Institute, which supports research into complex biological systems, developing and designing programmable smart materials to address global challenges in health, medicine and materials innovation. The Manning research group studies the collective behavior of group of cells in biological tissues as well as deformation and failure in disordered solids ranging from glasses to granular materials.

  • Defects and deformation in disordered solids and glasses.
  • Surface tension and emergent mechanical properties in developing embryonic tissues.
  • Mitotic waves and pattern formation in biological tissues.
  • Constitutive models for friction and shear banding.
