Myrna García-Calderón, associate professor and director of the Latino-Latin American Studies program in the College of Arts and Sciences, was featured in the Spectrum News story “Hispanic Heritage Month: Preserving the Spanish Language.” The article highlights the importance of elementary school students learning to speak two languages, in order to learn more about cultures other than their own. García-Calderón says, “I’ve had both personal friends and students who have expressed their concern, ‘I’m losing the language of my family,’ when I hear that, I feel that they think they’re losing a bit of their identity.”
