Whitney Phillips, assistant professor of communication and rhetorical studies in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, was quoted in the MIT Technology Review article “How to avoid sharing bad information about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.” Phillips, an expert on digital ethics, said that “people often think that because they’re not influencers, they’re not politicians, they’re not journalists, that what they do [online] doesn’t matter.” But she explained that it does matter, and the first step one should take when addressing important topics over social media is to understand that what you do online makes a difference.
