Roy Gutterman, associate professor of magazine, news and digital journalism in the Newhouse School and director of the Tully Center for Free Speech, was quoted in the Daily Beast story “Sarah Palin’s Anti-New York Times Crusades Crashes and Burns.” Gutterman, an expert on free speech and First Amendment law, explained that Judge Rakoff’s dismissal makes sense given the high burden of proof required to prove defamation in this case. “Because the plaintiff here is a high profile public official and figure, proving that the newspaper’s errors were a lot more than an honest mistake was a high burden she could not meet,” Gutterman said.
