Roy Gutterman, associate professor of magazine, news and digital journalism in the Newhouse School and director of the Tully Center for Free Speech, was quoted in the Axios story “Appeals could keep Palin v. NYT going for months.” Gutterman, an expert on First Amendment law, explained that the judge’s ruling followed both the law and the required burden of proof of actual malice, which is the highest standard in defamation cases. However, he said “it’s hard to chalk something up as a win or a loss because with appeals, this could still drag on for a year or more.”
