Bill Werde, director of the Bandier Program in the Newhouse School, was quoted in the Newsweek story “Joe Rogan Gets More Listeners in One Episode Than Neil Young, Joni Mitchell Get a Month.” Werde, whose career spanned decades in the music industry at Billboard, explained that part of the reason Spotify didn’t sanction Joe Rogan in favor of artists like Neil Young and Joni Mitchell is because their music simply does not bring in a wide audience for the streaming service. “If you had BTS or Taylor Swift pull off a Spotify you might see some different level of response,” Werde said.
