Should Vaccines Be Mandated? Syracuse Professor Weighs in

Shannon Monnat, associate professor of sociology in the Maxwell School and Lerner Chair for Public Health Promotion, was quoted by the Associated Press, “Why Vaccination Rates Are Lower in Rural Areas of the U.S..”

Monnat discussed how difficult it will be to change people’s minds who have chosen not to get vaccinated. She said, “Very few people who haven’t gotten vaccinated are going to change their minds at this point; they’ve dug in their heals, and misinformation is rampant. The most effective way to prevent continued spread, reduce hospitalizations and save lives is to mandate vaccines.”
