Students in the new media management master’s program at the Newhouse School now have the opportunity to learn and work with one of the country’s leading technology and digital media gurus.

Shelly Palmer

Shelly Palmer

Shelly Palmer, CEO of The Palmer Group, is joining the Newhouse School as the Professor of Advanced Media in Residence.

“Today, every business is a media business—so now is the perfect time to adapt and expand the new media management master’s program,” Palmer says. “I’m thrilled to be working with the extraordinary team and the exceptional students at the Newhouse School.”

During the fall semester, Palmer will teach the New Media Business course in a remote format. He will also make visits to campus to work directly with students and offer a public lecture.

In the spring, Palmer will co-teach the Case Studies in New Media course with program director Adam Peruta, and will assist with the immersion portion of the course in New York City. The four-day program allows students to hear firsthand from alumni and other industry leaders, tour major media organizations and get feedback on project pitches from professionals.

“Shelly Palmer is on top of the industry. His knowledge of media and technology—both traditional and new media—enables him to bring a level of depth to the students that they have not been exposed to before,” Peruta says. “He is an impressive individual who will inspire and challenge Newhouse students.”

Named LinkedIn’s “Top Voice in Technology,” Palmer runs a consulting practice that helps Fortune 500 companies with technology, media and marketing. His daily newsletter boasts more than 600,000 subscribers.

Palmer covers tech and business for Fox 5’s “Good Day New York,” writes a weekly column for Adweek and is a regular commentator on CNN and CNBC. He is the author of five books, including the Amazon No. 1 bestseller, “Blockchain – Cryptocurrency, NFTs & Smart Contracts: An executive guide to the world of decentralized finance.”

“This is just the beginning of what I anticipate will be long relationship between Shelly and the Newhouse School,” says Newhouse Dean Mark J. Lodato. “We are already looking to collaborate further to ensure Newhouse stays at the forefront of the intersection of technology and media.”

Lodato says he will call on Palmer for forward-thinking advice on topics ranging from the new media management curriculum, building advanced media certificate programs and conducting industry-related research.
