Mark Nevitt, associate professor in the College of Law, wrote commentary for Just Security, “China, Climate Change, Credibility: Why It’s (Finally) Time for the US to Join the Law of the Sea Convention.”
Nevitt explained, “Indeed, the recent U.S. submarine deal with Australia highlights the importance of UNCLOS. As these nuclear submarines are built and delivered, they will serve as a counterweight to China’s excessive maritime claims, and uphold maritime rule of law and freedom of navigation – as enshrined in the law of the sea.”
