Separate Construction Projects to Temporarily Close College Place, Smith Drive

Friday, July 16, 2021, By News Staff
Share

Two campus construction projects beginning next week will involve the temporary closure of College Place, due to crosswalk replacement work, and Smith Drive, due to the installation of Machinery Hall chilled water service.

College Place Closure

Campus Planning, Design and Construction (CPDC) is planning to complete the first phase of the College Place crosswalk replacement project, tentatively beginning Tuesday, July 20, or Wednesday, July 21, depending on the weather. This first phase will require two days of work and a closure of College Place to all through traffic.

While the work is underway, permit holders for the College Place lot will enter via Euclid Avenue. Permit holders for the Goldstein Alumni and Faculty Center lot will enter via University Place. Permit holders for the Lyman-Hinds lot, which is closed for chilled water installation to Machinery Hall, will continue to park in the College Place lot. Limited access to the Lyman-Hinds lot will be maintained for accessible parking only, with entrance via University Place.

The second phase of the project will occur after three weeks, tentatively beginning Tuesday, Aug. 10, and lasting for approximately three days. The disruption will be similar to the first phase, with closure of all through traffic and the same redirections for lot access.

For both phases, Centro will establish a temporary bus stop on Comstock Avenue.

Please contact Dave Warren, CPDC associate director, at 315.632.5238 or dcwarren@syr.edu with any questions or concerns.

Smith Drive Closure

Also next week, beginning Monday, the University’s chilled water distribution system operator, CenTrio, in coordination with Campus Planning, Design and Construction, is planning to begin the installation of Machinery Hall chilled water service. The installation is necessary to connect Machinery Hall to the central chilled water plant, to allow for reliable cooling of the critical ITS data server rooms in the building.

To complete the installation, chilled water lines will need to cross Smith Drive, north of Machinery Hall. With the full closure of Smith Drive, there will be no access to the Lyman-Hinds lot for the first week of the four-week project. After the first week, one lane of Smith Drive will be open to maintain parking lot access.

Please contact Clinton Maloney, CPDC project manager, at 315.440.8595 or cjmalone@syr.edu with any questions or concerns.

Delays in the proposed work may occur as a result of weather and/or unforeseen circumstances. In the event that there is a significant delay, updates will be provided as soon as possible.
