Message From Dean of Students Marianne Thomson

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

I am writing today with deeply sad news about the passing of one of our College of Law students, John Goerner. John was pursuing his degree through the JDinteractive program and was part of the Class of 2023. He lived and studied in Mohnton, Pennsylvania.

On behalf of the Orange family, Chancellor Kent Syverud and I extend our heartfelt sympathy to John’s wife, family, friends, classmates and professors. We share our deepest condolences with all those in our Syracuse University community whose lives he impacted, as well as all those who knew and loved him at home.

I recognize this week is especially difficult after the loss of two of our students. Please remember that there is always support available. I encourage you to reach out to the following resources and offices if you are seeking support or assistance:

• For Students: The Barnes Center at The Arch is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for confidential counseling. They can be reached at 315.443.8000. The Dean of Students Office provides ongoing support to students and can be reached Monday through Friday by calling 315.443.4357.
• For Faculty and Staff: The University’s Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, Carebridge, has trained clinicians available 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling 800.437.0911.
• All Campus Community Members: Hendricks Chapel is available for support and services by calling 315.443.2901.
