Gladys McCormick, associate professor of history in the Maxwell School, was quoted in the Sinclair Broadcast Group story “Biden pushes for more cooperation from Mexico amid migrant surge.” McCormick, who also serves as the Jay and Debe Moskowitz Endowed Chair in Mexico-U.S. Relations, explains that the there is a “perfect storm” of factors driving the current surge at the U.S.-Mexico border, including extreme weather events and new immigration enforcement policies under President Biden. While many are quick to jump to easy solutions, McCormick says the matter is more complicated, as there are underlying conditions in Central America that drive people to the border. “This problem is so much bigger than the U.S. and Mexico are capable of dealing with,” McCormick says.
