“People are turning to Nextdoor for tips on getting a vaccine.”
Jennifer Grygiel, assistant professor of communications in the Newhouse School, was interviewed by CNN for the story “People are turning to Nextdoor for tips on getting a vaccine. Why that may be a problem.” Grygiel, an expert on social media and misinformation, says it is concerning that people are relying on Nextdoor for vaccine information, as the platform is not fact-checked for information reported by local news outlets. “The risk is that Nextdoor is starting to serve as a place where people share information without the journalists who go and fact check it, and make sure that that isn’t misinformation. It becomes more like best-intentioned gossip,” Grygiel says.
