Research by Shannon Monnat, associate professor of sociology in the Maxwell School and Lerner Chair for Public Health Promotion, was featured in the Institute for New Economic Thinking story “Epidemic of Despair Could Haunt America Long After COVID.” Monnat has been working with a team throughout the pandemic to research how the coronavirus pandemic is impacting populations of drug users across New York state. Her research has found there is a “growing contagion of despair” amongst drug users, but also across society in general.
