Kendall Phillips, professor of communication and rhetorical studies in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, was quoted in the Apartment Therapy story “Yes, Mirrors are Unsettling and Creepy. Here’s How to Unlearn the Association (Or At Least Work Around It).” Phillips, who researches pop culture and film, says that pop culture associations are a motivating factor behind why so many find mirrors unsettling. “The creepiness is probably tied to the way in which a mirror creates a duplicate world—when you look in a mirror, you’re always seeing something that’s not actually there,” says Phillips.
