Shanna Kushner Gadarian, associate professor of political science in the Maxwell School, was interviewed for the WRVO (Syracuse) story “Balter claims Katko ads are racist, misogynist. Are they?” Dana Balter, the Democratic candidate in the race for the 24th Congressional District, made claims that opponent John Katko’s campaign ads rely on racist tactics by depicting a man with a hoodie walking through a neighborhood with voiceover talking about bail reform. “It does use these crime tropes in a modern way, which is to say Democrats will be so soft on crime that you and your family will not be safe,” says Gadarian, an expert on American politics and political advertising.
