Message from Dean of Students Marianne Thomson

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

Late last night, a member of our Syracuse University community passed away unexpectedly. John “Jack” Lundin ’24 was a first-year student studying magazine, news and digital journalism in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. John, who grew up in Tuckahoe, New York, was a resident of Flint Hall.

Together with Chancellor Kent Syverud, and on behalf of our entire Syracuse University family, we offer our sincerest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to John’s family, friends and loved ones. We keep all those who knew and loved John in our thoughts and prayers as they grieve this unimaginable loss.

This is an especially difficult week for our community as we mourn the loss of two young lives. Know that there are resources and services available to support our students, faculty and staff during this difficult time.

• Students: The Barnes Center at The Arch is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for students seeking confidential counseling support. They can be reached at 315.443.8000. The Dean of Students Office is also available to students for additional support Monday through Friday by calling 315.443.4357.
• Faculty and Staff: Assistance is available through Carebridge, the University’s Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, by calling 800.437.0911. Trained clinicians are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
• Students, Faculty and Staff: For additional support and services, campus community members may contact Hendricks Chapel at 315.443.2901.

In this difficult moment, it is important that we lean on one another for support and be there for those who need help. If you, or someone you know, is struggling in the face of these losses, please reach out to one of the above resources, or to a friend, family member or colleague. Please don’t hesitate to seek and ask for help.
