“Celebrating Indigenous People’s Day.”

Indigenous Peoples' Daynative american history

Scott Manning Stevens, associate professor and director of Native American and Indigenous studies in the College of Arts & Sciences, was quoted in the News Channel 9 story “Celebrating Indigenous People’s Day.” Stevens says that many students are never taught about the depth of the genocide that Indigenous peoples have faced in America. “You don’t really learn about Native American history or Native American culture after 4th grade and [school] doesn’t really talk about genocide, boarding schools, land disposition,” says Stevens. Stevens encourages everyone to learn more about Indigenous communities and their histories, especially given recent civil rights movements.
