Shannon Monnat, associate professor of sociology in the Maxwell School and Lerner Chair for Public Health Promotion, was quoted in the Bloomberg article “Suicides among U.S. kids, young adults jumped 57% in past decade.” Monnat, who is an expert social determinants of health, says anxiety is high across the entire U.S. due to general unrest. “There are many reasons to suspect that suicide rates will increase this year too, not just because of Covid-19 but because stress and anxiety seem to be permeating every aspect of our lives,” says Monnat.
