Shannon Monnat, associate professor of sociology and the Lerner Chair for Public Health Promotion in the Maxwell School, was quoted in the Newswise story “Rural COVID-19 mortality rates highest in counties with more blacks and hispanics.” Monnat recently completed research on the subject with a team of researchers from the Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion and the Center for Aging and Policy Studies. Monnat says the study found that “COVID-19 mortality is not distributed equally across the rural U.S., and the COVID-19 race penalty is not restricted to cities.”
