You’re Doing Great! Stay Safe this Weekend!

COVID 19

Dear Students:

Thank you! Over the last few days, we have been encouraged by what we have observed across our campus, in our classrooms and throughout our off-campus neighborhoods. The vast majority of our students are wearing masks, maintaining social distance, and taking the other necessary precautions to limit the potential of a COVID-19 outbreak on our campus. You are doing all the right things to keep us on campus this fall! We need to keep it going. Don’t let your guard down. Stay vigilant.

As you are likely aware, yesterday New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that universities in New York state that reach 100 active COVID-19 cases (inclusive of students, faculty and staff) would need to suspend residential campus life. This announcement follows media reports of COVID-19 outbreaks on college campuses across the United States.

We have been in touch with many of the universities that have experienced early COVID-19 outbreaks. What we have learned is that most of them have experienced a dramatic spike in COVID-19 cases following the first weekend of the academic semester.

Let’s not allow that to happen at Syracuse! This weekend, please wear your mask. Maintain 6 feet of distance. Limit the size of social gatherings. Wash your hands. Most importantly, be accountable to each other.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy this weekend, and the weekends to come, by getting involved in the activities across campus. Please refer to this list of resources and events for ideas of things to do this weekend, and let us know the kinds of activities you would like to see on campus. This is also a great time to get to know your roommate, floormates and classmates, and explore campus in small groups.

Thank you for what you have done thus far to keep our campus and community safe. We are proud of you. Let’s prove the doubters wrong and make our community proud.

Sincerely,

J. Michael Haynie
Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives and Innovation

Amanda G. Nicholson
Interim Deputy Senior Vice President
Division of Enrollment and the Student Experience
