The Orange community has been working diligently to not only prepare the campus but also to empower students for the Fall 2020 opening. A unique pillar of this experience includes 20,000 COVID-19 Wellness Kits for both on- and off-campus students. Kits are free and include three masks; an oral thermometer; hand sanitizer; a “no touch” tool; and an information card highlighting COVID-19 symptoms, actions to take if experiencing symptoms, the Stay Safe Pledge and more.

“The health and wellness team wanted to ensure that each student received needed resources to support a healthy transition to campus. Additionally, our support reaches far beyond the thousands of kits we’ve already started distributing to students,” says Katelyn Cowen, Barnes Center at The Arch director of health promotion. “In addition to available in-person and virtual services, an overarching communications effort inspired, curated and supported by Syracuse University student leadership has been launched and highlights COVID-19 health and wellness messages. Efforts are visible on campus and into our local neighborhoods through yard signage, digital signage, flyers and the Stay Safe. Stay Healthy. Do Your Part. Social Media Toolkit, available on Answers using your NetID and password. Stay tuned for new communications to be made available throughout the Fall 2020 semester.”

To support ease of collection, students moving into an on-campus residence will receive their COVID-19 Wellness Kit during their residence hall check-in. Students living in an off-campus residence will receive their kit when participating in their arrival screening test. The College of Law will communicate instructions for collecting kits directly to students.

Extra COVID-19 Wellness Kits, in addition to free masks, are available seven days a week at the Barnes Center at The Arch Pharmacy. Explore additional health and wellness services and learn how to access the Barnes Center at The Arch on the Fall 2020 Barnes Center at The Arch web page.

When reflecting upon first receiving a COVID-19 Wellness Kit, Alexandra Nicole Santiago ’22, Barnes Center peer educator shared, “Adding a thermometer was a nice touch because we’re required to stay home if we have a fever, but I would guess that most college students did not previously own a thermometer. It’s not something you think of when you move, even amidst COVID-19.”
