Department of Public Safety

A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. (CALEA) will be performing a full review of the policies and procedures, management, operations and support services of the Department of Public Safety (DPS) Monday, July 27, through Wednesday, July 29.

Once the CALEA assessors complete their review of the department, they report to the full commission, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted initial accredited status. Accreditation is for four years, during which the agency must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with an established set of professional standards under which it was initially accredited. A copy of the CALEA standards is available for review at the DPS officers. Please contact Detective Christopher Wood at 315.443.2481 to obtain a copy.

As part of this assessment, Chief Bobby Maldonado is inviting employees and members of the community to comment on the department’s ability to meet professional law enforcement standards via a Zoom public hearing on Tuesday, July 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. ET. For those who are unable to make their comments through the Zoom meeting are invited to submit their comments via e-mail to zandralw@uab.edu. Please indicate in the subject line that you are emailing about the Syracuse University Department of Public Safety CALEA review.

In order to provide public testimony, you must be logged into the Zoom meeting online or by phone at the start of the meeting. Please be prepared to provide testimony at any time during the public hearing. When it is time for you to provide public testimony, your name will be called and your phone/micorphone will be unmuted by the facilitator and you will need to state your name for the record. Visitors are encouraged to speak from a prepared statement to ensure best use of their 10 minutes to speak. If any registered speaker is not available, the facilitator will call the next person in the lineup. Please note that the meeting will be recorded.

Please register in advance for this meeting: https://syracuseuniversity.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJAkfuitrz0uH9WSeeunoCTxHmox60hknkPn

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

Any person wishing to offer written comments about DPS’s ability to comply with standards for accreditation or for more information may send them to: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc (CALEA), 13585 Heathcote Blvd, Suite 320, Gainesville, VA, 20155; or call 703.352.4225 or e-mail calea@calea.org.
