“Facebook’s voting labels on candidate posts sow confusion.”
Nina Brown, assistant professor of communications in the Newhouse School, was quoted in the Associated Press story, “Facebook’s voting labels on candidate posts sow confusion.” Facebook recently announced that it would start adding adding “informational labels to all posts about voting by federal elected officials and candidates in the U.S.” Brown, who specializes in the intersection of media law and technology, says that while “there is inherently no problem with Facebook deciding to add labels to all posts about elections and voting,” that Facebook has “missed the opportunity to do so in a clear and meaningful way.” Facebook has decided to label all posts rather than just the false posts about voting information, but this has caused confusion as “social media users are not used to seeing flags on content that is not problematic,” says Brown.
