Updated Move-in Schedule for Incoming and Returning Students

Friday, July 10, 2020, By News Staff
Share

Dear Students and Families:

As part of our planning for the Fall 2020 semester, the University is adjusting the move-in schedule for our incoming and returning students and their families. To protect the health and safety of all our campus community members and visitors, move-in dates have been extended and all students living in on-campus housing, including on South Campus, will need to register for a designated move-in time on the MySlice Housing Portal. This includes returning students living in on-campus housing. The portal will open at noon EDT on Monday, July 20.

The Fall 2020 move-in dates are as follows:

  • Aug. 17-20: New Student Move-In
  • Aug. 20-23: Returning Student Move-In

In addition to extending the move-in period, the following health and safety guidelines will be in effect to maintain social distancing and support good health practices:

  • Students will only be permitted to move in during their scheduled move-in time.
  • Students will only be allowed one guest in the residence hall at a time.
  • Masks or face coverings must be worn at all times during the move-in period, except when the student and guest are alone in the student’s room.
  • Roommates are encouraged to stagger their move-in times.
  • Guests of students may only stay two hours in the residence hall.

We understand that some students’ planned arrival dates could be impacted by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s travel advisory for states with high infection rates. We are awaiting further information from state officials on the 14-day self-quarantine implementation and will communicate with affected students as soon as more details are available.

In addition to our plan to test all students upon arrival, we are adding a pre-travel testing requirement. Syracuse University will require that all students be tested for COVID-19 before traveling to campus in August. We are incorporating this enhancement to our testing program based on recommendations of public health experts, and as a result of ongoing consultation with peer institutions in New York state and across the United States. We will provide additional details in the coming weeks related to how soon (prior to travel) this test should be completed and how to document a negative test result with the University prior to travel.

We are also awaiting further guidance on arrival for international students returning to campus. We are committed to making the arrival to campus as easy and safe as possible for all our students.

The health and well-being of our entire campus community—including all parents, family members and visitors—is our top priority. Guidelines may be subject to change based on further directives from local, state and federal governments or public health officials. We recognize this year’s move-in will be very different than past years’. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in adhering to this guidance so that we can safely and effectively assist students in moving into their on-campus housing.

We will continue to share more information pertaining to move-in registration, health and safety guidelines, shipping belongings and schedules as details are confirmed.

If you have any questions, please contact the Office of First-Year and Transfer Programs or Student Living. And please continue to visit Syracuse.edu/fall2020 for the latest news, updates and guidance from the University.

We look forward to welcoming you to campus soon, and please stay well!

Sincerely,

Amanda Nicholson
Interim Deputy Senior Vice President
Division of Enrollment and the Student Experience
