“Black Audiences Want Hollywood to Expand Beyond Slavery, Civil Rights Film Narratives.”

J. Christopher Hamilton, assistant professor of television, radio, and film in the Newhouse School, was interviewed by Morning Consult for the story, “Black Audiences Want Hollywood to Expand Beyond Slavery, Civil Rights Film Narratives.” Hamilton, an expert on the film and television industry with years of practice at various media conglomerates, says the reason audiences see a lack of modern Black storytelling in Hollywood is due to a “lack of diversity” where “the lack of relationships with diverse content creators, diverse casting directors and diverse agents” causes the industry to self-replicate stories that have already been told. However, Hamilton says that the key to continuing these conversations about diverse storytelling in Hollywood is “sustained pressure from consumers.”
