Devashish Mitra writes “India needs structural reforms for growth to make a strong comeback.”

Devashish Mitra, professor of economics and the Gerald B. and Daphna Cramer professor of global affairs in the Maxwell School, wrote an op-ed for The Economic Times titled “India needs structural reforms for growth to make a strong comeback.” Professor Mitra, who specializes in the Indian economy and development economics, says that one would expect the Government of India to come up with a plan on how to rescue the economy of India during a pandemic that has “thrown an estimated 122 mn Indians out of work.” However, Mitra says this has not been the case, and instead argues that “there needs to be a phased exit from the lockdown through extensive testing that identifies people who can go back to work with the confidence that they won’t contract the disease from others” in order to truly help the Indian economy.
