University’s Annual Service of Commemoration to Be Held March 10

Syracuse University will hold its annual Service of Commemoration, honoring Syracuse University students, faculty, staff, retirees and trustees and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry students who have passed away since Jan. 1, 2019, on Tuesday, March 10, at 4 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel.

The service will include prayer and music by University Organist Anne Laver and the Hendricks Chapel Choir. The names of those who have passed away will be read, and candles will be lighted collectively in their memory.

The service is inspired by the Remembrance Scholar motto of “Look Back, Act Forward,” a call to action to remember those we have lost and act forward in their memory.

“The Service of Commemoration provides an important occasion to pause, assemble, acknowledge our sorrow, offer reverence and discern how we can honor the lives of others by being the best version of ourselves,” says Hendricks Chapel Dean Brian Konkol. “This is a special and sacred opportunity to pay tribute to the students, faculty, staff, retirees and trustees who have impacted our campus community in countless ways.”

A reception will follow in the chapel’s Noble Room. There, remembrance books will be available for inscription.
