Commencement 2018

A University tradition recognizing two outstanding graduating seniors, the 2020 Senior Class Marshal application is now open. Current juniors graduating in May 2020 can complete the online application here. Faculty and staff can also submit online nominations here. All applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019.

“The Senior Class Marshals exemplify what it means to be Orange and embrace the many facets of the student experience. We encourage students, faculty and staff to nominate outstanding juniors who exude Orange spirit, demonstrate strong academic achievement, and are active in the campus and greater Syracuse community,” says Colleen Bench, associate vice president in the Division of Enrollment and the Student Experience and chair of the selection committee.

What is it?

Each year, two rising seniors are selected as representatives for their class. The marshals are students that encompass the spirit of the senior class, exhibit critical thinking skills, excel in academics and are actively involved on campus.

What does a Senior Marshal do?

The 2020 Senior Class Marshals lead the student procession at Commencement. They also assist in the selection of the Commencement speaker, engage with University administrators and stakeholders, and represent the Class of 2020 at University events throughout the year. Class marshals will share their experience and provide suggestions and feedback to senior administrators.

What is the application process like?

The application consists of:

  • a completed application form
  • an official University transcript
  • two faculty/staff recommendations (submitted by the recommenders)
  • “One University” essay

The search committee, comp0sed of staff from the Division of Enrollment and the Student Experience and current Senior Class Marshals, will then conduct interviews for selected finalists in February (dates TBD).

Do I qualify?

  • Must be a Syracuse University junior graduating in May 2020
  • Must be on campus for the entirety of their senior year
