City of Syracuse Planning Commission Approves Stadium Roof Replacement Application
Syracuse University Athletics is one step closer to creating a new stadium experience now that the City of Syracuse Planning Commission has approved its roof replacement application. Earlier this evening, during a meeting at Syracuse City Hall, the Planning Commission approved the application, greenlighting the University’s plan to construct a new roof, a critical component of the $118 million investment announced in May 2018.
“We are excited to move this transformative project forward and are confident the Syracuse University community, our fans, the City of Syracuse and the Greater Central New York region will benefit vastly from this investment,” says John Wildhack, director of athletics. “We appreciate the strong partnership with the City of Syracuse and Onondaga County and look forward to our continued collaboration as this project advances.”
Tonight’s Planning Commission vote follows months of engagement with stakeholders in the city and the county. It comes on the heels of Syracuse University announcing its intention to invest in creating a new stadium experience on its main campus.
As part of the investment, the University will construct a new fixed roof, significantly improve accessibility, install state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems, enhance Wi-Fi capabilities and erect a vertically hung scoreboard. These enhancements will be in place by fall 2020. Other phase one features include the installation of air conditioning, new accessible restrooms and new concessions space. These features are expected to be completed by fall 2022.
