Digital Toy Catalog Makes More Sense for Today’s Retailers
Amazon has announced plans to publish a toy catalog this holiday season, similar to the former Toys “R” Us “Big Book.” According to reports, the Amazon catalog will be mailed to millions across the country and distributed at Whole Foods stores.
Ray Wimer is an assistant professor of retail practice at Syracuse University’s Whitman School of Management. He says Amazon is filling the gap left in the toy retail marketplace with Toys “R” Us gone, but argues a digital catalog would make more sense for Target or Walmart rather than Amazon.
“There is a gap in the marketplace for a toy retailer, especially in the holiday season. I am guessing many people who relied on Toy ‘R’ Us would also rely on layaway and wouldn’t have the resources to shop or buy online.
“The people who shop online already wouldn’t see the need for a print catalog, perhaps a digital catalog would work for them. Wal-Mart and/or Target would make more sense as they have a broader physical presence.”
