Dear Members of the Syracuse University Community:
Like all of you, my colleagues on the Board of Trustees and I are appalled and deeply troubled by the recent behavior displayed by members of our Orange community. We are saddened for our students, our faculty, our staff and our alumni, most especially those who have experienced this kind of hatred before. This behavior in no way represents the values of Syracuse University.
For nearly 150 years, Syracuse University has been a place that embraces, values and empowers individuals from all backgrounds. That great tradition will not be compromised in light of recent events.
We appreciate and support Chancellor Syverud’s and his leadership team’s swift and decisive action and the manner in which they are prioritizing, listening, understanding and acting.
As the University continues to take action, the Trustees stand united against all behavior and conduct that violate the values that make the Syracuse University community diverse and unique. As students, faculty and staff come together to identify tangible ways to make change, I am confident we can achieve a more inclusive Syracuse University community.
