First Amendment Expert Explains Online Threat Case

Roy Gutterman, associate professor at the Newhouse School and the Director of The Tully Center for Free Speech, discussed the free speech issues of a man accused of making threatening statements on Facebook.
“This falls under what we call the true-threat doctrine. … Where is the line? It has to be specific. Very specific,” he said. “If (Reardon) had named an individual … there could likely be law enforcement intervention. It’s reasonable to be concerned. Political rhetoric is extreme right now.”
