Sam Sampere Talks Football Physics

Before Super Bowl LII, Sam Sampere, an Instructional Lab Manager in the Physics’ Department, discussed the science and physics behind the game with News Chanel 9. He joined the Bridge Street team to talk about all facets of the game, including injuries and the best way to prevent them.

“Football helmets have evolved to help protect them [the players] from these jarring blows to the head,” Sampere said of the ongoing concussion and CTE issue within the game. He also talked about hits in the game and the everyday necessity of pads, because, as he says, “if those forces were exerted over small areas, bones would be broken over every play.”
