Do you know a member of the University community who has made an outstanding contribution to the University through a significant commitment to scholarship, research excellence or advancing the institution’s missions and goals? Nominations are now being accepted for the Chancellor’s Citation for Excellence to be presented at the One University Awards Ceremony on April 20, 2018, in Hendricks Chapel.

The deadline to submit a nomination is Jan. 25, 2018.

The Chancellor’s Citation for Excellence recognizes members of the University community who have made invaluable contributions to Syracuse University in two overarching ways: through commitment to scholarship and research that contributes to new understandings of the world and creative responses to its needs; and through advancing the four pillars Chancellor Kent Syverud has identified to foster excellence at Syracuse University—providing an outstanding undergraduate experience; empowering research excellence; fostering change and innovation; and positioning Syracuse as the best university in the world for veterans.

The categories are:

  • The Award for Faculty Excellence and Scholarly Distinction is intended for faculty members who are collaborators in work of intellectual richness that has the potential for future impact. This work should offer possibilities for collaboration within the University and outside in partnership with others.
  • The Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Student Experience and University Initiatives is made to members of the University staff who, through their work, have enhanced the undergraduate experience for students, or made invaluable contributions to supporting and advancing the University’s mission and goals.
  • The Award for Excellence in Student Research is intended for students who have, during their time at Syracuse, engaged in collaborative research that has the potential to make a deep and lasting impact on the greater society.
  • The Lifetime Achievement Award honors those who have made extraordinary contributions toward advancing the four pillars of excellence over the arc of their careers while at the University and beyond.

Faculty, staff and alumni are invited to write a letter of recommendation that includes a short description (no more than two pages) of the noteworthy work or accomplishments. Along with the letter, submit a short CV or biography for the nominee (or URL for such) and any concise materials that display or exemplify that nominee’s outstanding work.

Nominations can be addressed to the Chancellor’s Citation for Excellence Selection Committee in care of its chairperson, Professor Shiu-Kai Chin, and submitted in hard copy to Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs LaVonda N. Reed, 503 Crouse Hinds Hall, 900 South Crouse Ave., Syracuse NY 13244, or by email to Sharon Alestalo at swalesta@syr.edu.

As part of the review process, the committee may consult with nominators or others designated as able to speak to the candidate’s excellence and suitability for recognition.

The Chancellor’s Citation Selection Committee will complete its work and make their recommendations to the Chancellor in March. Citation winners will be notified by letter no later than March 31, 2018. Recipients of the Chancellor’s Citations for Excellence will be honored at the ceremony in April with an original work of art by a member of the Syracuse University faculty.
