Expert Grygiel Explains how Social Media Sparked #MeToo Campaign
A wave of social media posts using the hashtag #MeToo swept over online accounts, in a movement aimed at bringing to light the vast reach of sexual assault and harassment. Assistant professor of communications at the Newhouse School Jennifer Grygiel spoke with KJZZ radio about how social media helped spark, and spread, the meaning and values of this campaign.
“We’ve learned a lot about how we can make our one voice matter and be heard,” she said in the interview. “If we are able to organize around hashtags and campaigns, members of the public can actually come together. It’s hard to do on your own, it really does kind of take this collaborative movement. It’s impactful when it’s adopted by so many people.”
