The Engineering Science Behind Thrill Rides at the State Fair
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Professor John Dannenhoffer explains how midway thrill rides use engineering principles to twist, turn, drop and thrill people at the New York State Fair.
“A roller coaster is all about energy. You go very slow up a ramp and you gain a lot of height, i.e., a lot of potential energy, and when you get to the top you start rolling down, as you go lower and lower,”says Dannenhoffer. “There is an awful lot of engineering that goes into creating the tracks and paths that you run.”
