More than 1,400 students dedicate countless hours to practice, travel and games through their involvement in sport club teams during the academic just completed. This year, 49 registered teams with the Department of Recreation Services competed across the country, with many earning regional and national accolades.

Men’s ice hockey club members encourage each other.

“As the former director of sport clubs for over 20 years, I continue to admire our sport club student-athletes and the caliber of competition they bring each year,” says Joseph Lore, director of Recreation Services. “Their hard work and commitment to their sport is evident as seen in the continued success they achieve at the regional and national levels.”

At the national level, 12 teams competed in the collegiate national championships in their sport, including English equestrian, women’s gymnastics, men’s gymnastics, women’s ski racing (Nordic), men’s volleyball, women’s volleyball, boxing, cycling, swimming, running club, men’s ice hockey and women’s soccer club.

At the regional level, 11 teams competed in the collegiate regional championships in their sport, including men’s basketball, cricket, English equestrian, western equestrian, men’s ice hockey, quidditch, men’s ultimate frisbee, ski racing, roller hockey, women’s basketball and women’s soccer club.

At the individual level, a number of sport club student-athletes earned recognition, including:

  • Ifeanyi Uwanaka and Jeffrey Frelier, boxing, All-American recognition
  • Nate Segal, Pat Herlihy and Isaiah Johnson, men’s basketball, 1st Team All-Conference
  • Darshan Masti Prakash, cricket, Best Batsman Award at Regionals
  • Peter-Owen Hayward, men’s ice hockey, Northeast Collegiate Hockey League (NECHL) MVP and 1st Team All-NECHL
  • Abbey Timpano, women’s basketball, Sportsmanship Award at Regionals

In addition to their athletic achievements, the sport club teams are dedicated to giving back to the community and participating in volunteer and service projects throughout the year. Teams have participated in Syracuse Welcome Goon Squad, Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity’s Shack-a-Thon, the Breast Cancer Walk, Take Back the Night, Adopt-a-Street, Polar Plunge and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

“Our sport club student-athletes’ involvement extends beyond their respective field, court, pool, rink or floor—they are also engaged in countless hours of volunteering and campus activities. On top of managing their academics, practice and competitions, they are active in giving back to their teammates, the campus and the community as whole,” says Angie Petrie, associate director of programs in Recreation Services.
