Applications Being Accepted for New Online Master’s Degree in Entrepreneurship

The Martin J. Whitman School of Management has announced a new degree offering within its existing partnership with 2U, Inc. (NASDAQ: TWOU). Entrepreneurship@Syracuse, a master of science in entrepreneurship degree, adds to the Whitman School’s already robust online graduate business degree program, including MBA@Syracuse, a master of business administration; Accounting@Syracuse, a master of science in professional accounting; and BusinessAnalytics@Syracuse, a master of science in business analytics.

Entrepreneurship@Syracuse will help students develop the tools and mindset to achieve entrepreneurial success in several possible career roles, such as the founder of a startup business or the entrepreneurial manager of a family business or innovative, growing business. Students will learn to develop, evaluate and pursue opportunities and create an environment that embraces an entrepreneurial spirit.

Whitman also offers a traditional full-time on-campus M.S. in entrepreneurship and emerging enterprises.

The Whitman School’s new interdisciplinary degree includes a global view of entrepreneurship, as well as opportunities for students to choose from a variety of electives, including Sustainability-Driven Enterprise, Corporate Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital. Students will complete core foundation courses in entrepreneurship, financial accounting, marketing management, strategic management and managerial finance.

Entrepreneurship@Syracuse will utilize 2U’s cloud-based software-as-a-service technology platform. Students and faculty will meet weekly through live online class sessions and students will also complete immersive course content between classes, accessible both online and offline, on computers and mobile devices, from any location.

“For many entrepreneurs, it would be difficult to attain a graduate degree because they really can’t leave their businesses for a full-time, on-campus program,” explains Alex McKelvie, department chair for entrepreneurship and emerging enterprises. “An online format is ideal for those who want to keep their businesses growing and get their education.”

McKelvie adds that military veterans, in particular, find an online entrepreneurship program to be attractive.

“As part of our commitment to serving military veterans and their families, we conducted market research to better understand their unique needs,” says John Torrens, professor of entrepreneurial practice and program director. “The vast majority of the veterans with whom we spoke wanted to pursue their education in an online mode. Our new Entrepreneurship@Syracuse program helps them achieve their educational and business goals while providing them flexibility in where they are geographically located for personal and family reasons.”

The degree consists of 30 credits and can be completed in as little as 15 months. Each year, there will be two start dates, in April and October, with admissions decisions made on a rolling basis. The first application deadline is June 27 (priority) and Aug. 1 (regular), and the first class begins in October.
