Twenty students participating in the Newhouse School’s Financial and Investor Communications Emphasis (FICE) traveled to New York City Nov. 16-18 for a benchmark trip, gaining an up-close view of the financial industry and the role of the communications professionals who work in it.

While in New York, students visited a number of organizations, including Teneo Strategy, a global business consulting and financial communications firm; LHA Inc., a financial communications and investor relations firm; AXIS Capital, an insurance and financial services company; Prosek Partners, a public relations agency with a strong investor relations practice; TPG Capital, a private equity investment firm; the Federal Reserve Bank of New York; Joele Frank, a financial communications/investor relations agency; and General Motors.

They also attended a Financial Media Roundtable hosted by alumnus Gary Kaminsky ’86, co-host of Fox Business’ “Wall Street Week,” whose gift to the school made the benchmark trip possible. Producer and former CNBC executive Susan Krakower ’83, who developed “Mad Money,” and CNBC anchor and author David Faber also participated in the discussion.

“This was an amazing and unforgettable trip,” says Marina Rubio, a sophomore public relations major with a minor in finance. “I learned so much about different financial communication specializations that will definitely help me figure out what type of work I would like to do in the future, and it was reassuring to see how successful Newhouse grads are!”

The students were accompanied by Anthony D’Angelo, professor of practice and FICE director, and Donna Stein, an investor relations consultant and adjunct in public relations who conceived of the emphasis and taught the inaugural FICE course in investor relations this fall.

About the Financial and Investor Communications Emphasis (FICE)

Launched this semester, the Newhouse School’s Financial and Investor Communications Emphasis prepares students for communications careers in the financial sector, including financial services, investor relations or corporate communications. Through specialized coursework and experience, students learn how to effectively communicate the valuation, business and financial story of a company to members of the Wall Street community, including the news media, financial analysts and shareholders.
