The annual Students of Color Leadership Retreat is scheduled for Oct. 21-23 at Oswegatchie Educational Center. The retreat is organized and sponsored by the Office of Residence Life as a way to provide students with an opportunity to explore their identity and develop their leadership potential. Participation is free and includes travel, lodging and meals. The deadline to apply has been extended to Oct. 9.

soc-leadership-retreat-2016The retreat is open to students who self-identify as a person of color, with an emphasis on students early in their academic careers or seeking to get more involved at Syracuse University. Throughout the retreat, students will participate in self-reflection, dialogues, team-building and outdoor activities.  The retreat also gives students the opportunity to connect with one another and staff of color who lead the retreat.

The Students of Color Leadership Retreat was started by members of the Office of Residence Life’s Leadership Team and Diversity Committee in 2000.  The retreat has grown to 50 participants each year and has led to numerous students getting involved in student organizations, serving as resident advisors or leading their own efforts on and off campus.

To participate, students must complete the online application.  For more information or to ask questions, contact Arienne Milkles, coordinator for staff selection and inclusion education in the Office of Residence Life.
